Anyone interested in blood types?

I was recently asked to add support for recording a patient's blood type.

Thanks to OpenVPMS's architecture this was a piece of cake - tweak the party.patientPet archetype and write a report - so we now have:

and

If anyone is interested, yell and I will add the stuff to the Resource Library.
If lots are interested, we could add this to the next OpenVPMS release.

Re: Anyone interested in blood types?

Hi,

This would be a useful addition. In the short term a simple solution like this is ok. However in the longer term a more sophisticated system may be required.

Why:

- Blood types are species specific (e.g. Cats have an A/B system, Dogs have a DEA system).

- An animal can potentially have multiple blood types. For example cats have an A/B system, but also there evidence they can also be MIK +ve/-ve at the same time. While this is not typically tested for at the moment, we may find in the future we need multiple classifications.

Re: Anyone interested in blood types?

Adrian - I discussed the idea of constraining what could be entered in the Blood Type field with Trilby. She asked that it be left as a simple text field (30 char max) in which one could put any data. This somewhat goes against the general OpenVPMS rule of 'when possible force validation of the data'.

I suspect that in a couple of months we will be able to see the advantages and disadvantages of not having any data constraints.
