[Data Migration] migration from other programs

how will the migration from say RXworks be done? will the database just migrate happily and will all information pass through? will this program let the user know if extra data has not been transfered in a case where there is no field for the data? eg if a dog is from a refering practice and there is no field for that information, will openVPMS let the person doing the migration know that this information has nat been passed on?

Re: migration from other programs

Hi, We are developing data migration tools for a number of popular practice management systems which will be available for download from our site when the product is released. The tools will extract and transform existing data into a format suitable for loading into OpenVPMS using our a data loader tool we have already developed. We have been testing this on Netvet and RxWorks databases. We expect these tools to be finished in a couple of months. The great thing about the structure of the OpenVPMS database is it can be readily configured to take a very wide range of information from other systems. The actual database structure is very simple having a total of 25 tables of which about 8 are system tables. The data and relationships that can be stored in these tables is completely configurable from outside the system using a process called archetyping. Archtypes define the information that needs to stored, the relationships between information (collections, references etc) and constraints on the data. By defining a new archetype we can cater for the different data from different systems without having to modify the database at all. This is a very powerful concept that really sets this project apart from other traditional software models. We will continue to analyse existing systems data but so far we have not found any information that cannot be migrated. Obviously if we do we will inform current users of the issue and provide some kind of work around. Regards Tony
