Abaxis Link

Hi,

We have abaxis vetscan VS2 biochem and HM5 haematology blood machines in our practice. Is there any way to connect openVPMS with the pc link for these machines?

Thanks,

Shanon

Re: Abaxis Link

OpenVPMS can't submit orders to these particular machines, but can automatically import results if they are saved to a directory with a file name containing the investigation identifier.

See Document Loader for more details.

Re: Abaxis Link

Thanks for your reply. Would you have any information or could you point me in the right direction for setting up this feature?

Many thanks

Re: Abaxis Link

Shanon:

Q1. What version of OpenVPMS are you running?  The link provided by Tim A is to the facility in 1.8 - if you are running an earlier version the inbuilt document loader facility does not exist - but there is a docloader utility - see http://www.openvpms.org/documentation/csh/1.7/concepts/investigations which contains a link to http://www.openvpms.org/documentation/automatic-document-importing-openvpms

Q2. What operating system do you run OpenVPMS on? Windows or unix and what version?

Note that even if you are running 1.8 or later, there are reasons to use a scheduled job to run docloader because it is possible to handle some of the situations that the inbuilt facility cannot.

Re: Abaxis Link

Hi Tim,

We are running v1.8 on windows 7 professional 64 bit.

Re: Abaxis Link

Sharon - I have put the bat files in the resource library - see http://www.openvpms.org/customisation/bat-files-running-docloader

I have included a link to how to set up a scheduled task.

NOTE: although you are running 1.8 and thus have avaliable the in-built Job Scheduler facility to run docloader, my personal preference is to run docloader via a scheduled task because of the 'multiple results files with the same name' problem (which is discussed in the resource library entry).

Re: Abaxis Link

So I've set up the link via USB, its set up to use COM4. I've tested the link with Putty and can see number data coming through when I send the record on the HM5 machine.

But is there an intermediate piece of software that I need that can recognise the data and store it as a pdf etc so that the data loader can then import into openVPMS?

If i dont use putty, and I press the send data on the HM5, the computer does nothing.

Thanks for any help,

Shanon

Re: Abaxis Link

So there are 2 options here.  Either ABAXIS themselves provide you with a program that accepts the data and converts it to a file identified by the requisition number OR they tell you excactly what format they are sending the data in so you can look for a program that can absorb the connection....if you want to post the deidentified data that you recieve as a stream from the putty connection we can help you identify it ...they may be an open source program that will do the job.

I am suprised your not getting any support from the ABAXIS makers.

Re: Abaxis Link

Abaxis do have software that is windows only that can be used to interface with the VS2 via the USB connection to publish results as a pdf file. It is called the abaxis data manager can be downloaded from their website: http://updates.abaxis.com/data_manager/

I have been told by Tan Dinh, REM systems technical services manager, that a new version of the data manager is coming in the next month which will also connect to the HM5 and produce results from both machines in a PDF format. This will then be able to be imported into openVPMS.

We have been printing the combined results from the HM5 and then scanning them for import using the docloader.

We have a scansnap scanner and use it to scan many investigations for import into openVPMS. We just highlight the investigation number before scanning and the highlighted investigation number is set as a keyword in the pdf document produced. I then have a script that changes the filename to the keyword (the investigation ID) and moves it to the appropriate folder which is polled by the document loader.

Sounds complicated but it all works in the background so it's actually just a short process- highlight the investigation number, stick it in the scanner and then press scan. It then ends up in the patient's record.
