[General Discussion] Internationalisation

Hello All, Just wondering if there is any support for other languages? If there is no french version available, I'd be very happy to contribute. Keep up the good work, Parker

Bon Jour

Hi Parker, No no French lang as far as I know. But written in such a way that international language support is possible - Tony will fill in the details I'm sure. Matt

Re: Internationalisation

Hi Parker, There are a number of areas where we have thought about internationalisation. All the button tags, messages etc are defined in a single messages.properties file located in the web application. This the typical java approach allowing locale specific files to be added which will be automatically used based on the current locale. Locale is also used throughout the application for dates, times and currency. You can define additional currency settings by adding a lookup.currency and associating with the practice. This is for things such as rounding. The most important area area we need to add internationalisation support is in the archetype definitions. These define the objects and relationships that we store and are used also by the screen rendering system to display labels and object names (i.e Patient -> Sex ). Currently we would need to provide modified versions of these to support the different language, replicating the structural stuff that is actually common to all languages. This is not ideal so we have been thinking about an alternative approach. Any thoughts/contribution in this area would be great ! Tax regimes is an area we have also thought about a bit and implemented a pretty flexible approach but it still needs to be tested in a production environment with more difficult tax settings than Australia (generally a simple GST on everything with minimal exclusions and no additional state tax issues). Any ideas or comments on what else we can do would be much appreciated .. Cheers Tony

Re: Internationalisation

Thanks for the reply Tony and Matt, I have started getting message.properties translated into French. There are some 800 lines, so please be patient :-) There will presumably have to be some locale setting to specify the text files, currency, tax regime etc. Does that exist yet? Could you point me to a few archetype definitions so I can get a better feel for the problem. Presumably we'd want to avoid duplicating structural information to avoid redundant code. I have no experience in internationalisation but it's nothing new so hopefully there should be no need to re-invent the wheel. Google threw up this link which you may already have seen. http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/i18n/index.html Cheers, Parker P.S. Other files to translate? parker@popper:~/openvpms/openvpms-release-1.0$ find . -print | grep messages.properties ./webapps/WEB-INF/classes/org/openvpms/web/app/reporting/errmessages.properties ./webapps/WEB-INF/classes/org/openvpms/web/app/workflow/otc/errmessages.properties ./webapps/WEB-INF/classes/org/openvpms/web/component/app/errmessages.properties ./webapps/WEB-INF/classes/org/openvpms/web/component/im/print/errmessages.properties ./webapps/WEB-INF/classes/org/openvpms/web/component/im/doc/errmessages.properties ./webapps/WEB-INF/classes/org/openvpms/web/component/im/mail/errmessages.properties ./webapps/WEB-INF/classes/org/openvpms/web/resource/localisation/messages.properties

Re: Internationalisation

Hi Parker, Firstly apologies, your post skipped my attention and with the web site revamp I only just saw it. yes these property files would need to be i18n as well. You are correct concerning the archetype files. The archetypes need to be separated into Structure and Display components so there is no duplication. We have yet to come up with a solution to this but I suggest you post some ideas on the developers forum and we can throw these around until we find a good solution. In the mean time the only way is to edit or add the displayName attributes of the archetype nodes (painful). Tax and Currency is handled inside the application itself. You can create different tax type lookups which you can apply at the practice, product type, product and/or customer level. Currency is also a lookup which you can set at the practice location level (just in case a practice has multiple locations with different currencies !) The application utilises standard java i18n support so if you name your properties file according to your local i.e messages-fr.properties these will be picked up at runtime from your current locale settings. Cheers Tony

French translation of messages-fr.properties - about 60% done

I ran into a few things difficult to translate and am a bit of short of time at the moment, so I thought it would be a good time to send in what I've done so far in case anybody else wants to chip in. What's the best way to send it in? I couldn't see a way of attaching a file and inline it's way too long (800 lines). Hope to carry on when I'm a bit less busy. Cheers, Parker

Hi Parker, Thanks for the update and good work. I think the best approach currently is to send it directly to me and I will do some preliminary testing and incorporate in the svn repository. I will send you my email address off line. Cheers Tony

You can view it here: http://www.openvpms.org/fisheye/browse/openvpms/vpms/trunk/src/java/org/... We need more input from interested developers on supporting different locales. If you want to kick off a discussion, please post your ideas to the developers forum.
