New style of multi selection box for editing lookups, types, organisation, templates, users, customers, patients & products

It is hard to find an exact forum for this idea as the need for a multi select list box has arisen in multiple topics.Tony summarises it well here: http://www.openvpms.org/forum/reducing-clicks#comment-2104

The idea is to allow the user to create a list then work from that list to edit the individual items. This is contrary to the current situation where selection of a customer, patient, product etc is done through the SELECT button. This means that the list dissapears after a selection is made and needs to be re created to make another selection.

A sample workspace would work like this:
1. Filter your list by entering Name etc
2. Make a selection and edit.
3. An editor pops up.
4. When you complete your edits and close the editor the list is still there so another secltion can be made.

This would be very helpful in product editing but even customer selection can be very handy as well.

This still needs some discussion so the forum is open but a development project has been created in anticipation!

Re: New style of multi selection box for editing . . .

We are currently doing a full fee review in OpenVPMS - cleaning things up after our recent conversion.  I've been doing most of the work on it, and it is a painfully slow process.  The suggestion above would be a great help in reducing the steps required and improving the functionality of the program!

Development Update: Multiselect box

A development JIRA has been created for this project here.

Development Update: Multiselect box

For simple edits, would being able to edit directly in the table be simpler?

This would include things like changing strings, dates, checkboxes and single participations (e.g, patient, customer, etc)

You could still have the option of popping up an edit dialog for editing more complex nodes.

Development Update: Multiselect box

 Hi Tim,

That sounds like a great idea.

Devlopment Update: Multiselect style of editing

Hi everyone,

A reminder this project seeks to;

"...The idea is to allow the user to create a list then work from that list to edit the individual items. This is contrary to the current situation where selection of a customer, patient, product etc is done through the SELECT button. This means that the list dissapears after a selection is made and needs to be re created to make another selection..."

The current solution proposed is;

a) We edit from a list of items (in a table) rather then one by one.

b) A new editable selection dialog, launched via a new button in the existing workspaces.

I need feedback on two options;

Option 1)

Do we just select a row, click it and edit from a new dialog? (Approx. $165 + $85 per workspace)

OR

Do we edit within the table itself? (Approx. $990 + $155 per workspace)

Option 2)

Current suggested workspaces;

Customer, Patient, Product, Template

Any more?

Will post costing with a specific feature list based on feedback in 2 weeks.

Cheers,

Matt C

I'm happy with "just select a row, click it and edit from a new dialog".

List of ittems to edit

Hi,

Looking at Option 1: What is the benefit of one versus the other? (selecting a row vs editing within a table?)

Sandra.

List of Items to edit

Hi Sandra,

In answer to your question "What is the benefit of one versus the other? (selecting a row vs editing within a table?)"

I think the main advanatage of "In table" editing is that it is quick, fewer clicks and allows you to view all the other results whilst editing. Whether this is worth the extra development costs is the question.

For mine, I agree with Matt Y. Single click and edit would suffice.

This project is being finalised off and a costing assigned in the next few minutes!

There will be a further two projects being created as a spin off from the discussion relating to this project. The next couple of posts will explain.

Two new projects created from this forum

Hi everyone,

The discussion relating to this topic "New style of multi selection box for editing lookups, types, organisation, templates, users & products" has resulted in two new projects being created.

Batch Editing of Customers/Patients

and

Customer search results remain after selections

Make sure you have your say if you have opinions, positive or negative about either. Furthermore this project has been costed and is awaiting funding pledges (Click here). As is always the case, no development will occur until the project is 100% funded, so pledge away!

Matt C

Batch Editing

Just to check - in the conversion to the 2 new projects the word 'products' seems to have been lost - I just wanted to make sure that all similar lookups would be treated the same way - products, clients, patients and various areas in the 'Administration' tree. I know I did not put my word in for 1.4 and made an 'assumption' that 'Cutting and pasting' appointments would include 'copy and paste' - an obviously wrong assumption that hopefully will be corrected in 1.5. So I am not assuming that all fields will be thus until I see it in B&W!

Funding Update (New style of multi selection box for .... )

A user has donated to the project!

Thanks for the support.

Moving from item to item

Brian Mills

Hi

First time posting a comment so I hope I am not breaking any rules.

After completing the edit of the item there should be an option to jump to the next or previous item's edit box rather than going back to the list. Selection of "OK and Next" or "OK and Previous" should be via the keyboard.

Thanks

Hi Brian,
Welcome. I'll take this suggestion to the meeting. I'm a big fan of
keyboard shortcuts myself.

Multi Selection Box

Sandra @ Bellarine

Hi,

I just navigated to the link above and I see that the 'Customer Search Results remaining after selection has been cancelled.  Is that because they are now being included in this development?

Sandra.

Re: Multi Selection Box

Hi Sandra, Yes that is the plan. The developrs are working through the project. It may be that this project needs to be revived for this behaviour to be included.

Stay tuned.

Re: Multi Selection Box

Changes have been made to all the requested workspaces with the exception of the Customers and Patients Information workspaces.

The workspaces now display:

  1. the query, where search criteria can be input
  2. the query results, where you can select a row to view or edit

When you view or edit a row, the dialog displays a Previous and Next button so you can navigate to the previous and next rows respectively.

Below is a snapshot of the Products -> Information workspace to give you an idea what it looks like.

The Customers, Patients and Suppliers workspaces haven't been changed as the new workspace layout is more applicable to batch editing..

For these workspaces, I think the Customer search results remain after selections project needs to be reopened and the requirements reviewed.

 Product Information Workspace

(EDIT: If you don't see the image, here's the link: Product Information Workspace)

Re: Multi Selection Box

The new behaviour for the product workspaces and the admin workspaces will work brilliantly but they just wouldn't work for the customer workspace as it is a different kind of workspace.

I think you're right Tim and the Customer search results remain after selection project should be reopened. It would really solve the problem in these workspaces as the general frustration is with having to rebuild the query every time you press select.

I'm not sure it would work or be necessary within the patient workspace, but I rarely use the patient workspace to find a patient, I usually do it from the customer workspace.

I guess in suppliers the same sort of behaviour as clients would be best.

Customer Search results persist in Selection box

As Tim has explained the solution for the Products and other workspaces did not suit the Customer search/select dialog.

Therefore the "Customer search results persist" project has been taken off cancelled and reopened.

Once costing has been provided we will be looking for interested parties to pledge support to get developed.

Cheers,

Matt C

Customer Search results persist (User input needed)

Hi everyone,

A bit of revision;

As Tim has explained the solution in this Project worked well for the Products and other workspaces but did not suit the Customer search/select dialog.

Therefore the "Customer search results persist" project was reopened.

The idea relates to the circumstance where you enter a search for a customer, find the wrong one, then have to go back and re type all your search parameters again to get the list back.

The solution that has been suggested is as follows:

1. Instead of the "Select" button in the Customer workspace, we will have two buttons "Find Again" and "New Search" (or names similiar).

"Find Again" opens the previous search complete with all items in fields. You can modify them, rerun the search by pressing Find (Alt-F) change page, whatever.
"New Search" opens a blank search page just as "Select" does currently.

An alternative if we wanted prior searches (not just last one), would be to have a list of the previous searches in a drop down box. Pressing "Find Again" would use the search selected from the list.

Would that work for most users? Do we want to have a list of prior searches? (It will cost more most likely).

Customer Search Again button

Brian Mills

Hi all.

I think the search again button for customers will actually work very well.

BM

Customer Search

HI Matt,

I don't think the "prior searches" button is required.

I'm probably going to frustrate you here because this has probably been explained befor, but above where it's mentioned that the other search solution worked well for the Products and other workspaces but did not suit the Customer search/select dialog.  Was this because it's just  impossible to develop in the customer workspace or was it more a cost thing?

The alternative above sounds ok (the FIND AGAIN) button but it's still another click. That's getting fussy I know!

Sandra.

Re: Customer Search

Hi Sandra,

It was a long discussion between the developers but providing my memory has this correct, the main problems with using the type of selection workspace which has been applied for Products and other Administration type things, is that it just didn't work well with SELECTING a client. For example in the context of making an appointment. It wasn't a cost thing but rather the workability of the solution. A different solution was required for Customer selection.

You know I am a click hater too. I think the solution has the minimum number of clicks possible in the re-selection process.

eg. Currently to search a customer, make a selection, re search with the same criteria: 1. Press SELECT (Alt-L) 2. Enter Name 3. Enter Patient Name. 4. Press ENTER in patient Name 5. Choose Customer with mouse. 6. Wrong patient. Press SELECT. 7. Enter Name 8. Enter Patient Name. 9. Press ENTER in patient Name 10. Choose Customer with mouse.

In new version: 1. Press SELECT (Alt-L) 2. Enter Name 3. Enter Patient Name. 4. Press ENTER in patient Name 5. Choose Customer with mouse. 6. Wrong patient. Press FIND AGAIN. 7. Choose Customer with mouse.

I can't think of a way of not having to do something at Step 6 to get back to Search results?

New style Product/ Admin selection box

Brian Mills

Hi. This subject seems to have morphed into the Customer search/ Product so I am a bit lost.

Hope this goes somewhere.

When selecting Previous or Next it would be ideal for the product page to stay open on the same open tab page as you were on previously.

Thanks

Brian. :-)

Re: New style Product/ Admin selection box

Hi Brian,

The original description included the Patient and Customer areas. Some of the discussion in the topic has therefore included discussion of these two areas and rather then start a new forum topic I have linked to this one.

Please note the New style for selection of Products, Archetypes etc etc is actually complete (it has been funded and actually developed).

Cheers, Matt C

Customer (Find Again) (Update)

Hi guys,

I have sent the Customer "Find Again" option to the developers for review and costing. Remember this is to get customer search results easily retreivable but keep the flexibility of starting a blank search with a single click or keystroke.

The specification does this:

Cheers,

Matt C

Re: Customer (Find Again) (Update)

A most necessary feature to save time and frustration. Would have been great when we were setting up but will still be useful to any user none the less. We will support this one.Glen On 3 September 2010 00:01, <mpcosta@boroniavet.com.au> wrote:

Customer (Find Again) (Costing Update & invitation for pledges)

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder what this one is about;

Instead of the "Select" button in the Customer workspace, we will have two buttons "Find" and "Find Again".
"Find Again" opens the previous search complete with all items in fields. You can modify them, rerun the search by pressing Find (Alt-F) change page, whatever.

Tim has costed at $580.  This is provided this is fully funded prior to the Version 1.5 deadline at the end of September.

After that $190 will be added to the feature estimate.

Cheers,

Matt C

Customer (Find Again) (FundingUpdate 80%)

Some what provocatively and to test the mettle of the OpenVPMS community, this project has been funded to within an edge of its life.

From 0% funded to 80% funded overnight.

We need another $116 to have it in Version 1.5 or $306 for Version 1.6 (remember every project will have $190 added to each costing after Version 1.5 to allow version releases every 4 funded features.

Cheers,

Hi everyone,

Just catching up after a busy period at work.

This was fully funded prior to the 1.5 cut off.

Thanks to all the contributors.
