This post is here simply to help others who may get into the same poo as I did.

I have a shiny new laptop running Windows 8.1 - during the install I managed to set the language to English UK rather than English Australia.

I noticed that OpenVPMS was showing pounds signs as the currency, rather than dollar signs.

No problem - I must have the Control Panel|Region settings wrong.  Checked - no OK - is set to English Australian.  However digging further, I found:

So the welcome screen and system accounts (under which Tomcat runs on my system) are using English UK.

I ticked the two boxes in the ‘copy your current settings to’ section, pressed OK, restarted Tomcat – and bingo - $ signs not pound signs.
