OpenOffice RTF to PDF conversion painfully slow -----------------------------------------------

Converting moderately sized RTF documents to PDF can take minutes (one 15M .rtf took 45 mins). As access to OpenOffice is single threaded, this blocks other users from performing other document conversion and prints via OpenOffice.

The problem seems to stem from the fact for .RTF documents, a "Rich Text Format" FilterName must be specified when loading the document into OpenOffice. Failing to do so causes OpenOffice to load the document a byte at a time over the network.
