I've just realised (yeah a bit slow, I know) that v1.5 offers "Invoice Sort Order" as a field under Product Type in Administration - Types (actually I was fiddling about with v1.6b2 and then found that the feature had been implemented in v1.5.1).

I'm starting to think about how I'm going to implement the sort order in such a way that I won't need to go back and change it once I've set up the overall framework.  I decided to arrange the sort order in such a way that it would resemble typical flow through the clinic: consultation -> diagnostic workup -> hospitalisation -> anaesthetics -> radiography ->surgery (incl dental) -> medications (with sub-orders for injection, oral, topical, diets), and finally some sundries/accessories for the pet at chack-out.

This is what I came up with: I've tried to start each major section of the clinic/hospital at a multiple of 10 which then will allow a fair bit of ordering even within each section.

01    Consultation and Vaccination
10    Lab Diagnostics
20    Intensive Care/Hospitalisation
30    Sedation/Anaesthetic/Analgesia
40    Dental Procedures
50    Surgery
60    Surgery Consumables
70    Medication (incl 71-75 Injection, 76-80 Oral, 81-85 Topical, 86-90 Diets)
95    Sundries

This would seem to then permit a more logical ordering when explaining an estimate or invoice to clients as the charges would appear in sequence.
