1.8 with Java 6??

I am looking at what needs to be done to upgrade a system from 1.7.1 to 1.8

It is running Tomcat 6 and Java 6.

On the basis of 'change only one thing at a time' can I leave Java 6 running while I install 1.8 and then at a later time upgrade to Java 8?

This will work for 1.8. For 1.9, sites will need to update Java first, as it requires a minimum of Java 7.
