Can it run on an ipad?

Hi

This may be a silly question but I couldn't find the answer anywhere.

I am looking at setting up a mobile practice - can I run OpenVPMS on an ipad, or just a laptop?

Thanks

Karin

Re: Can it run on an ipad?

Hi Karin,

If you set OVPMS up on a cloud server, you can set this up to be accessed on an ipad. However you will require internet connection.

The program does not live on the ipad in this instance, it lives elsewhere and can be accessed via a web browser from any internet enabled device(ipad/tablet/laptop/computer/etc). Multiple users can access all at the same time. Otherwise you will need a computer/laptop.

A laptop is likely easier to setup, however you need to ensure this is backed up regularly and properly otherwise in the event of a disaster you will loose all your data. It also means only once person at a time can acccess.

If you are a single vet doing mobile work and don't intend on requiring multiple people to be using the program at once then I would suggest a laptop is a more cost effective way to go. It also means if you don't have internet access then you can still access OVPMS.

Others can correct me if I am wrong.

Re: Can it run on an ipad?

To add what Adrian said, if you are a bigger practice running OpenVPMS on one windows machine and using other desktops and laptops as work stations, then you can use an iPad as yet another workstation.

I suspect that you could in fact use a MAC machine as the OpenVPMS server since one can run Tomcat and MySQL on a MAC.

For a workstation, you can use any device that supports Safari, Chrome or Firefox - even your phone.  HOWEVER, the OpenVPMS screens are not designed for use on a small format device.  Thus, I can happily see the openvpms login screen on my phone, but it is pain to use.

Thanks, both replies very helpful.

Re: Can it run on an ipad?

Two points:

  • Despite their high resolution, iPads don't let you use the full screen resolution when browsing, so you may find that you need to scroll to see all of the fields.
  • in 1.9, you will be able to edit documents (e.g. patient letters) within OpenOffice and automatically save them to OpenVPMS. This is supported on Windows and Mac OSX, but not the iPad.
