Derived values - when calculated?

Am I correct in understanding that derived values are calculated when the item is created or modified, and not at presentation time.  That is, if I change an archetype to change its description field to a different expression, then there will be no effect on the information displayed until the item is created or modified?

Correct. If you want to refresh the derived fields of existing items, you can either import or edit the archetype via the Administration -> Archetypes page.

This detects changes to archetype nodes and prompts you to update the associated items.
