Help setting up SMS Reminders
Submitted by bellvet on Tue, 13/09/2016 - 10:48
Hi,
I've been on the forums trying to find information on setting up SMS patient reminders for vacc, worming, etc.
I've found the two posts below but can't find any more information. In the post titled 'Patient Reminder SMS Template' I can't find the Edit Patient Reminder SMS Template page that's pictured in that post on my system. We're using version Version: 1.8.1 (6812) and I can see the SMS box in the reminder template. Do I need to wait until version 9 to get access? Are there any instruction documents to assist me in setting the SMS reminders up?

Re: Help setting up SMS Reminders
In 1.8, SMS reminders are set up via the Reminder Type and Document Template. These are limited to static text.
In 1.9, macros and expressions are supported.
Re: Help setting up SMS Reminders
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Does 1.9 have a release date?
Re: Help setting up SMS Reminders
Hi,
When you say limited static text. Do you mean that what we type in the sms field in the template is what goes out and that we can't use patient names?
Re: Help setting up SMS Reminders
That's correct. You are limited to SMSes like:
"Your pet is due for a vaccination. Please contact Vets R Us on 91234567 to make an appointment"
We are currently testing 1.9 in several practices and expect a beta out before the end of the month.

Great, thank you!
Re: Help setting up SMS Reminders
Hi,
I am having issues as well.
I have a patient reminder attached to a consult. The reminder type has SMS ticked. The document template has a SMS template attached.
When I go to generate the reminder it says SMS next to the name. When I press "Send All" it wants to print a list.
Any pointers on where I am going wrong?
1.9 (7285)
Thanks,
Adrian
Edit: It is worth while adding - I am testing on my own file. Has a phone number with Preferred and SMS ticked, and I marked it with "Reminder" for good measure.
Re: Help setting up SMS Reminders
Adrian - have a very good look at the customer's contacts and check out the "Post, Email, SMS, List or Export?" part of http://www.openvpms.org/documentation/csh/1.9/reporting/reminder
We are in the process of switching to email reminders and I have had to build a set of reports to check the reminder purpose settings on all customer contacts, and a set of SQL statements to clean things up.
For us (switching to email reminders) the process has been:
1) check that all email addresses look valid
2) check that there is only one preferred email address per customer
3) clear all reminder purposes
4) set purpose Reminder for all preferred email contacts
5) set purpose Reminder on phone contacts for customers who do not have a preferred email contact
6) run report to print list all customers who do not have either one email address with purpose Reminder or one or more phone contacts with purpose Reminder set.
[Actually this generates a large list - since one does not have to worry about customers who do not have patients with reminders, I tweaked this to a version that only looks for customers with patients with current reminders who do not have either one email address with purpose Reminder or one or more phone contacts with purpose Reminder set. And the plan is to run this prior to doing the Reminder runs.]
In your case (SMS reminders), you probably want slightly different logic to the above.
However, the bottom line is to make sure that you have the reminder purposes set as you need them, and make sure that if you want to do other than list the reminder (ie you want to post, email, or sms) then you have only one contact of the appropriate type set with purpose reminder.

Re: Help setting up SMS Reminders
Hi Tim,
I did read that. However I clearly stopped at the second bullet point in that section. Having a careful (and complete) read through, I think the issue is that we already had an email contact with "Reminder" and this didn't work. So then I set an SMS contact with reminder as well. This still didn't work as it was picking up the email address first.
What I was trying to achieve was to send an email reminder for some things, and a SMS reminder for others. I.e. the same client getting different reminders via different methods.
From what I am understanding, this doesn't appear possible given the current logic/system....

To send via SMS for some things, and email for others:
Re: Help setting up SMS Reminders
Hi,
I am not sure what is meant by the second bullet point. There is no grouped reminder template. But the other points are all accounted for. However it is now emailing rather than SMSing.

Re: Help setting up SMS Reminders
For SMS to be enabled, the grouped reminder template needs to have an SMS Template, even if it is not used.
The grouped reminder template is the Document Template with Type 'Grouped Reminders'.
