Kinglake Vet Clinic

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone is interested in helping out with advice for setting up a computer system for Kinglake Vet Clinic.
I am volunteering with them for a few days and think this might be a good way to help them for the future.
The Kinglake Vet Clinic burnt down in the bushfires along with the computers and computer files. Therefore, they are currently using a A4 booklet recording details of animals they see as they go (not even card system).
Not exactly sure what is going to happen in the future with the clinic, but there will be one of some sort here, and the patients that have been here over the last 4 weeks are likely to stay and continue to come to a clinic along with new pets.
Therefore, we are trying to sort out some computers or laptops for them and then set them up an OpenVPMS program so we can transfer all the information they have correlated over the last 4 weeks onto it, and set them up so they can continue in the future.
I am not really sure what I am asking people for, but I guess if anyone has any ideas for set up or help please let me know or post it on the forum. As much help as possible will be great. Kate (the vet) is amazing and everyone here has been absolutely fantastic in this difficult time.
Thanks everyone,
Greta

Re: Kinglake Vet Clinic

Hi Greta,

I am happy to provide any services required to install and setup the program on a computer or network of computers. I have some standard databases for new practices that will save time setting up products and schedules, reminders etc. Obviously OpenVPMS itself is essentially free so that isn't an issue. I am sure the OpenVPMS users wouldn't mind if the administrators made alternative arrangements regarding the normal subscription fee ...

I think a few of us will have access to some computer equipment that may be suitable ...

Cheers Tony

Re: Kinglake Vet Clinic

Hi Greta, There are a few scenarios we could try; 1. Get a laptop and get OpenVPMS installed as a single terminal solution. Not a bad idea ion the interim to get their data recorded. 2. Get a networked solution on site. But i fear there may be no "site" to speak of. This would require a box to work as a server and some networking capability. 3. If they have internet, we could host an installation of open vpms on the internet ( even on the openvpms domain Tony?), so they could access it using any internet capable computer until they have locations sorted.

I'm more then happy to travel up there and spend some time setting up and showing them how to use it when we have a solution running.

Re: Kinglake Vet Clinic

Hi Matt,

Think laptop simplest and most mobile initial solution. Can then have time to think about more permanent solution when more permanent location found.

Need to find a spare laptop and printer. Any Integrators out there who could help with some spare equipment that would be suitable ??

If laptop older or has insufficient memory for a standalone install we could definitely look at an Internet option but think simpler and more mobile if stand alone ...

Cheers Tony

Re: Kinglake Vet Clinic

Thanks guys, you are amazing.  At the moment they have wireless internet via the RSPCA but it is pretty average connection and when the RSPCA go so does the internet. I am trying to sort out some kind of funding for Kate for some internet for the interim.  You are right that there is no site to speak of. At the moment they are in an empty building which will obviously not be long term. Not sure where funding for a new clinic is going to come from... hopefully the AVA will help out somehow.  So I suppose the server box thing might have to be in the future and a wireless type system in the meantime.  I think if we set up OpenVPMS on a laptop and either do internet training for Kate or if I come up here (if you are interested in coming up too that would be great) we might be able to get through a lot more.  As for the computer equipment, I don't mean to pressure anyone to donate stuff, but if there is stuff lying around that people don't need then it will be much appreciated. They have had very generous donations of food/drugs etc which has been great for treating the animals, but the future is what I am thinking about. If we can help make records and set up of a future clinic easier then I think that's the best way people can help. Again thanks so much. Kignlake vet clinic

Hi Greta,

Still haven't managed to find a decent laptop at this stage. Afew offers of older desktops which may come in handy later. I've contacted the "Byte Into IT" crew who have a show on RRR community radio and they will broadcast a request for specific donations from thir audience on Wednesday coming. RRR has been very strongly involved with organising help for the bushfire victims and are very keen to help as part of their community mandate.

Hope this generates some help for Kate.

RE: Kignlake vet clinic

Hi Matt, As a bystander in all this albeit we have taken on one of the destroyed animal refuges in Kinglake as a project, I am humbled by your readiness to help in this way and it makes me proud to be an Australian, a veterinarian & a fellow user of Open VPMS. Well done,

Regards,

Tony Vigano

Community

Cheers Tony. Community action is probably is the real potential of OpenVPMS of course.

Kinglake vc

Hey Greta,

The request went out last night on the radio but no responses so far

I do have a desktop computer been made available. Will see if any offers come in in the next couple of days but otherwise we could set up a desktop.

Let me know.

Kinglake vc

Thanks Matt,

Desktop computer will be great help for either reception or office.

Kinglake update

Hi everyone,

Some of you already know this but seeing it is an example of how the OP community can work beyond just software I thought I would post an update.

Tony managed through his connections to acquire a laptop via a generous donation from IBM. We also have a dcent desktop that Kate will be able to use in her slowly  reestablishing clinic. Hopefully once its apropriate some of us will head up to help with the training of using the program.

As Tony Vigano mentioned previously, it does make you proud to be part of a community that can use its strengths to get good outcomes like this.

Will keep you all informed.

Cheers,

Matt C

Kinglake Vet Clinic

To all and whom it concerns, I would like to apologise and explain to all who have read or had anything to do with the post I made previously. At the time of the previous post, I was not sure what was going to happen with the clinic in the Kinglake district. I was however, trying to assist in the interim for the relief centre in recording and computer systems (hence the laptop and OpenVPMS)  The focus of the posting was to assist a previous employee of the Kinglake District Veterinary Clinic who has subsequently set up a clinic called Mountain Ranges Vet Clinic. Any person who has offered donations or advice for this clinic has had it explained clearly that it is not for the previous owners of the clinic. My motivation for seeking wider assistance in this matter was came after volunteering in the relief centre and interacting with the community. The animal relief centre played a vital role in the care of both the animals and the people of this devastated community. There was no intention on my behalf to undermine the previous owners of the clinic, it was driven by wanting to assist the community and the efforts that the veterinarian in question was making to support her community.

I am extremely grateful to those who have helped and if anyone feels they have been misled please feel free to contact me for an explanation. Sincerely, Greta
