Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hey everyone,

It has probably been more then 6 years since the Melbourne OpenVPMS users all got together but with the potential release of Version 2 in 2018, the time may be more than overdue.

I was interested in;

a) Who's out there!

Are you a Melbourne user who is still reading the forums and can make it to Melbourne in the next 3-4 months?

b) What features ?

Which entries in the "Development Projects" column (home page of this website) tickle your fancy? Do you have a wishlist?

Looking forward to hearing from some old users and some new ones.

Cheers,

Matt Costa

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hi Matt,

Good idea for a catch up at some stage.   I'm happy to come over from Adelaide for a meeting if we can manage to have one.   Possibly having a meeting at central location could be good to allow for others to come interstate as well??

I have lots of ideas and suggestions for where we need to improve but most importantly I think we need to provide a focus and discussion around your mantra of "every click eliminated is good for the soul"... https://openvpms.org/forum/reducing-clicks-and-improving-productivity

Happy to be involved.

Cheers

David

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hi,

Sam would be happy to host it if Kensington is a suitable location.

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

HI,

I am happy to fly in from Sydney if we can make it a convenient time. Always happy for an excuse to visit Melbourne.

Also - I think a meeting is a good idea to help generate some ideas and direction for useability imrovements in particular.

Perhaps suggest some times/dates?

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hey Greta,

Thanks to you and Sam for the offer of a venue. It will be like old times!

cheers

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Thanks David and Adrian.

Any Melbourne/Victorian users? ☺️

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hi All,

Mat - just wondering if you've got any dates / times in mind for a meeting?   If we want to have a catchup this side of Christmas / January we probably need to look at some dates shortly so everyone can plan to be there.

Would late Nov or early Dec suit?   Do we want a whole day / half day?   Guessing that for most people avoiding a Monday would be best.

Gretta - if we can host in Kensington are there any 'better' dates / times that would suit??

Sorry for being a little pushy on this; I think its a great opportunity

Regards,

David

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

late november/ early december best for me.

May I suggest Friday 1st December as a starting point.

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

David/Adrian - at this stage it looks like being Fri 8 Dec (Matt and I have been having an off-forum conversation and he has been nice enough to tweak the schedule to avoid the days when my chemo has its 'makes you feel crappy' side effects.)

Matt should confirm this date in the next day or so - and I need it ASAP to book the necessary flights.

We have also been building a topic list which hopefully should be published shortly - and I have suggested to Matt that we start a new forum post to handle this rather than continuing with this post which is getting quite long.

Regards, Tim G

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

That date is fine with us, but am flexible to what suits those coming from interstate.

We have the space here so doesn't matter what day or night we have it.

Greta

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hi, this date is fine. I will make it work.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

NB. Perhaps use steering committee forums to host/facilite discussions?

Cheers,

Adrian

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

That evening is fine for us. Is it just Friday evening or will it also spill over into Saturday? We will be booking a room, so we need to know how many nights.

Friday day is fine with me.

Preference for a meeting during the day so that those of us who need to travel may be able to get home at the ending the day.

thanks

Hey David,

Sorry we couldn't organise a day meeting.

Can you still make the 6.30pm - finish?

Would be great to see you,

Cheers,

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hi,

Probably the Quest in Flemington http://www.questapartments.com.au/properties/vic/flemington/quest-flemin...

or any hotel in Melbourne city as we are only three train stops from Flinders Street station.

Greta

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hi everyone,

Please find attached to this post the Project List for the upcoming meeting.

The purpose of the document is to get our creative juices flowing and to remind us of what has been suggested before.

The home of projects: OpenVPMS projects

See you at 7.30pm Friday Dec 8th at Kensington.

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting: Projects List

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the list and information, I think it's going to be a very productive meeting.

Just wondering how I add to the list? Or is this reply enough?

I'm just wondering if there might be a feature for CTRL-Z throughout OpenVPMS. Ie if you accidentally delete an appointment or an invoice or a customer. Even though there are pop-ups to alert you that you are about to delete, would it be possible to CTRL-Z anyway?

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting: Projects List

Greta:  I think that this topic is best added to David Mason's list.

However, I think that you need to first clarify exactly want you want Ctrl-Z to do. I think that you are after some sort of undo mechanism - AFTER you have OK'ed the prompt that says "This operation cannot be undone".  If this is what you want then I do not think that it is possible.

Note that there is a long outstanding JIRA - https://openvpms.atlassian.net/browse/OVPMS-1428 reported by me against 1.6 which if implemented should go some way to improve the sometimes confusion about what will happen when you press a button. For example the "This operation cannot be undone" message could have buttons "Yes - Delete Permanently" and "No - Cancel Deletion".

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting: Projects List

Hi Greta and Tim,

I will add this to the list (set of slides) I created.

This is similar to the https://openvpms.org/forum/delect-customer-invoice-warning as Greta has previously raised.

Cheers

David

Although this topic is not on the (current) topic list, I thought the results might be interesting and that it would be worthwhile to include it.

As always comments/feedback welcome.

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting - Quick Poll

Quick poll – hands up if you:
Use the Help (Alt-F1) system ? Yes - But others don't. Most general users are mouse only users in my experience.
Encourage staff to use the Help system ? Yes - but to no avail. People are generally busy/in a rush and even error screens are viewed as an insurmountable roadblock. Issues generally are not attempted to be worked through with any rigor or system in my experience.
Use OpenVPMS 1.7 or earlier ? No
Use 1.8 ?No
Use 1.9 ?Yes
Use the current version (1.9.3) ? No
Reason for not upgrading: Custom version - harder to just jump through upgrades. each requires more work
Happy with earlier version ?
Can’t find someone to do it ? Generally needs to involve tony de k - I am concerned ever he becomes unavailable.
Use a 2.0 pre-release ? Soon
Use the Letterhead & Document Control facility ? Yes
Use platform:
Amazon/Linux ? Server
In-house Windows ? Desktop environments
In-house Linux ?

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting - Quick Poll

Use the Help (Alt-F1) system ?

•Not via F1, but use the online resources extensively, either searching for a phrase or going straight to the Online Documentation
Encourage staff to use the Help system ?
•Yes
Use OpenVPMS 1.7 or earlier ?
•No
 Use 1.8 ?
•Yes
 Use 1.9 ?
•No
Use the current version (1.9.3) ?
•No
 Reason for not upgrading:
•Need to update server hardware first.
 Use a 2.0 pre-release ?
•Yes
Use the Letterhead & Document Control facility ?
•Not yet
 Use platform:
• In-house Linux

Use 1.9 ? Yes
Use the current version (1.9.3) ? No
Reason for not upgrading: Need someone to upgrade it for us
Happy with earlier version ?
Can’t find someone to do it ? Yes, we don't have a set person to do it, so often just wait until another issue comes us.
Use a 2.0 pre-release ?
Use the Letterhead & Document Control facility ? No, I don't think???
Use platform: No
Amazon/Linux ? No
In-house Windows ? No
In-house Linux ? No

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting - Quick Poll

Use the Help (Alt-F1) system ? YES

Encourage staff to use the Help system ? Yes but they don't. None of them use keyboard shortcuts, they won't even find help in the menu system let alone use a keyboard shortcut for it. There needs to be a graphical way to get there with the mouse.

Use OpenVPMS 1.7 or earlier ?

Use 1.8 ?

Use 1.9 ?

Use the current version (1.9.3) ? YES

Reason for not upgrading:

Happy with earlier version ?

Can’t find someone to do it ?

Use a 2.0 pre-release ? no

Use the Letterhead & Document Control facility ? Partially. The work to get it done vs the benefits are not currently in the favour of using it for us at present.

Use platform:

Amazon/Linux ? In-house Windows ? In-house Linux ? In house ubuntu

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting - quick poll == not now

I apologise if I was not clear - I was not seeking responses to the quick poll now - I intended to do it by show of hands at the meeting. However if you think that there are other poll questions worth asking, please yell.

From the 3 responders, I find it worrrying that the help system appears to be little used. In spite of this, I am confident that it has been worth building, if only because in forum posts I can answer a question with a link to the appropriate page in the help system. I also find it personally very useful when I cannot remember how things work.

I also like Matt Young's suggestion that there needs to be a ? widget on every screen and clicking it is the equivalent of pressing Alt-F1 - yet another thing for the user interface redesign.

Reg

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting - quick poll == not now

Hi, Noooo... the help system is very VERY useful. There are many many times I would have needed the forums or you but have found my answer through the help system.

However it does need improved visibility and accessibility? widgets everywhere.

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

I didnt want to feel left out ;-)

Quick poll – hands up if you:
Use the Help (Alt-F1) system ?

Yes. See Above
Use OpenVPMS 1.7 or earlier ?

Reason for not upgrading:
Still exploring features from fairly recent upgrade to 1.9
Happy with earlier version ?
Yep
Can’t find someone to do it ? Yes, we don't have a set person to do it, so often just wait until another issue comes us.
Use a 2.0 pre-release ?
No
Use the Letterhead & Document Control facility ?
In some templates but not all those provided.
Aiming to gradually transition. Excellent templates.
Use platform:

Some
In-house Linux ?
Yes All terminals

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Quick poll – hands up if you:
Use the Help (Alt-F1) system ? Yes
Encourage staff to use the Help system ? Yes, but they don't. Then again, I sometimes don't either.
Use OpenVPMS 1.7 or earlier ? No longer
Use 1.8 ? No
Use 1.9 ? Yes
Use the current version (1.9.3) ? Yes
Reason for not upgrading earlier: Current instructions were hard to decipher (and my tutorials tend to get red-flagged<g!>.  Would be happy to write an illustrated "upgrade tutorial for dummies" if needed).
Happy with earlier version ? Yes, do like some features of 1.9.3 though.
Use a 2.0 pre-release ? No.
Use the Letterhead & Document Control facility ? No, don't see the benefit for the work required (at the moment).
User platform:  Windows 7 and 10
Amazon/Linux ? No
In-house Windows ? Yes
In-house Linux ? No

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Still on my wishlist from 2011: invoice item rounding (eg for injections where less than a whole unit is invoiced).

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hi,

Do they have Brisbane OpenVPMS User Meetings?

Meredith

Re: Melbourne OpenVPMS Users Meeting

Hi Meredith,

The meetings have been arranged by interested users in their own city. May I suggest that you start a new topic under the heading of Brisbane User's Meeting and see if anyone is interested in joining up. You will need some facilitators who have a good working knowledge of OpenVPMS as well. I am not sure if Ben might be interested in joining in but let's see what sort of response you get.

Peter
