[OpenVPMS Developers] Standards for veterinary supplier Electronic Data Interchange?
Submitted by tanderson on Thu, 23/04/2009 - 00:47
Does anyone have any information about what standards for supply chain EDI are used, and in which jurisdictions?
Or are the interfaces typically proprietary?
There are a few open standards available which could be used: EDIFACT - http://www.unece.org/trade/untdid/welcome.htm ASC X12 - http://www.x12.org/ ebXML - http://www.ebxml.org/ UBL - http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=ubl In Australia, there doesn't appear to be much adoption of the above. In fact the only reference I've found so far was for a demonstration project back in 2004 for the pharmacy sector*. This used EDIFACT in conjunction with Australian Standards AS 5023.1 and AS 5023.2

Tim

I for one think these standards are rarely used in small to medium sized business's although they have lots of merits.
I would love to utilise something like these as they can readily grow to meet ever increasing business to business electronic transaction requirements but unfortunately they can be very complex and costly to implement. Something that may be beyond your typical veterinary business budget

I think that they're rarely used because small and medium sized business use tightly integrated stacks (eg. programs like quickbooks where everything is provided so they don't need to integrate to anything else). When business ask, why can't they use something else, the reasons for standards are much more obvious (interoperability, freedom of choice, lower costs, etc etc).
Actually I think that is the opportunity here. For point to point EDI, small and medium busines can exchange a mutually agreed upon EDI. This can be as easy as importing or exporting an XML file. For larger or more complex buisnesses, Service providers (like Virtual Connect and VetAnyware) can provide a broker/gateway where we can provide the mediation, transformation and routing of EDI formats between various applications. Another option is that by using an EDI as a more formal data exchange system, we may be able to run a hybrid envirnoment (2 VPMS software) whereby we can provide a more gradual migration path than a pure, "full migration over the weekend". The most important contract that we have between each other is that there is a commitment of using a "standard" or publically agreed syntax for exchanging data from system to system.

Yes - although as far as I'm aware HL7 is not designed for e-commerce.
Should we wish to export and import patient data from other systems, HL7 is a likely candidate.
I was interested to know if there was a dominant standard in use for e-commerce between vpmses and suppliers.
As an aside, there is an ebXML message wrapper for HL7 version 3:

is a likely candidate.
Any plans for this?
