Product naming for fast access

I recall, but cannot locate, a statement in one of the forums about product naming for fast access.

This was along the lines that the product name was set to something short that idenitified the product and the writer indicated that their vets never needed to search for a product.

Looking at the product data in the demo system, this has been done with the identities, ie "Chloramphenical 125mg Tablets" has the identity "CHLO125".

However, when one is using the system and entering a product for an invoice or medication item, the search is done on the product name and not the identity as well - so if I enter chlo125 as the product, the system will not find "Chloramphenical 125mg Tablets".

Am I correct is concluding that in order to implement fast access, the identity does not matter, but the product name should be set to the short form (ie CHLO125) - and of course setting the Printed Name to the full "Chloramphenical 125mg Tablets".

Or am I missing something?  Is it possible to set the system up so that the product search when entering an invoice or medication item is also done on the identities?

Regards, Tim

Re: Product naming for fast access

I preface many products with shortcuts in product name: cx50, cx250, mtc32, mtc100, etc.  I've never used identities.

Product name is shown as "cx50 Clavulox tablets 50mg" (always have drug name after shortcut code), Printed name is shown without the code, so "Clavulox tablets 50mg".  My staff know most of these shortcuts as they were used on our card file system which we retired about 18 months ago.  "mtc32" is "Metacam Oral Dogs 32ml" and so on.  For billing blood tests, I'll have "IDEXX CBC edta smear" in product name and "Blood Test: Complete Blood Count" in Product Name.  Similarly I see "ASAP 701 T4 plain", client sees "Blood Test: T4 Hormone Assay". (This jogs my memory as to tubes etc required).

If staff (or me) can't remember the code, a simple %clav finds all the "clavulox" items.

I also preface our product price templates for common surgical procedures with an "@t ": typing "@t" <enter> into product immediately brings up a list of templates to choose from.  It really speeds up invoicing.

Re: Product naming for fast access

Thanks Yuri - I will run this past my clients.  Regards & Happy Christmas, Tim

PS - in the last para I think you mean 'product templates' (ie 'procedures' in RxWorks speak) rather than 'product price templates' (ie 'standards prices' in RxWorks speak)

Re: Product naming for fast access

Yes, you're right:  there are actually two errors in my post:

1.  In the second paragraph..... "Blood Test: Complete Blood Count" in Product Name <----Product Name Should be Printed Name;

2.  And yes I meant "template" rather than "Product Price Template".

Yuri.
