Re: Good list of requirements in the "ideal"veterinary clinic software

Here's a link on DVM 360 on the competitors to OpenVPMS along with prices, features comparison, etc etc//veterinarybusiness.dvm360.com/vetec/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=174475&pageID=1&sk=&date=">http://veterinarybusiness.dvm360.com/vetec/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=174475&pageID=1&sk=&date= On Tue, Apr 14, 2009 at 11:06 PM, Tony De Keizer <tony@verticalconnect.net> wrote:
Hi Albert, Had a brief look and it would seem OpenVPMS hits most of not all of the feature points noted in section 7 of this article. Like most comparisons that are centred around specific product marketing its the features that are not mentioned which are probably most important.  What is also important is how these features are implemented and how efficient they are in a clinic environment.  There are hundreds of ways to do the same thing but some are just so cumbersome they are little better or sometimes worse than the paper/manual equivalent.  Many software products “throw” these features in so they can put a tick in a feature list in some marketing document.

I think what is really needed is a independent, veterinary, assessment of a set of  mandatory(and possibly optional) features for practices with a implementation score based on ease and efficiency.  I BTW I am not saying that OpenVPMS would always score high in these comparisons but it does have some big advantages over the others.

  • There is an open forum where users and non users alike to openly discuss, criticise and contribute ideas to features.
  • This same community does the marketing so there is a less likelyhood of exaggeration. :-)

Actually, when we started the project, we developed a set of functional requirements that may form the basis of this type of comparison.  You can find it here. //confluence.openvpms.org/confluence/display/VPMSPROJ/Functional+Requirements" target="_blank">http://confluence.openvpms.org/confluence/display/VPMSPROJ/Functional+Requirements Must admit hasn’t been updated for ages which is a bit remiss but may be useful and worth resurrecting.
