SMS log

Hi,
We are using the SMS system quite a bit now. I'm wondering if its possible to have the SMS that is sent to be recorded somewhere. For example, if a SMS is sent a copy of it is logged in the documents or notes somewhere so other staff can refer back to it.

Re: SMS log

Currently I dont think OPVPMS logs it Greta however, because sms's are sent using email, your sent email will keep a copy, as should the SMS provider you use.

Re: SMS log

Hi.

Greta, we at Eastside have the same issue. I believe as this is a client communication it should be logged in the history as a note. I think this should be a future modification.

Re: SMS log

I would expand that to log individual emails sent from within OVPMS, if we are now discussing an improvement, Im not sure a history entry is appropriate every time, (what if you use the system to notify a client a product they ordered(lead etc) has arrived - not appropriate for medical history at all.

I think you are talking about a communication log that links the client and/or pet(not required) and can also link a history entry(or not)

This information can often be vital in the sad he said she said situations that often arise 6mths done the track with a few communications from staff that leave or move on and clients.

Tack onto this the outstanding improvment to add SMS as a reminder method (we can use email/mail/phonelist currently)

Project or additition to existing project is probably the most appropriate step. But first a discussion regarding exent of the proposal and requirements. So list what your requirements are and then we can flesh out the practical side!

Re: SMS log

It is true a history entry may not be appropriate each time (though for us it almost always is). So I guess perhaps on communication forms (e.g. SMS, email) there should be a tick box "Save to history". These communication notes could then be toggled from the medical records screen etc like charges are in the new version.

Re: SMS log

I would agree with the 'save to history' tick box. However this then raises the question of the default setting on the tick.  It would seem that the most complete solution would allow the setting at the practice or practice location level of:

  • always save to history
  • never save to history
  • default is save to history
  • default is not to save to history

With the first two the individual user has no choice - the administrator has defined what will happen. With the last two, the user can save or not save, by altering the default setting.

This then opens the question of what other parameters should be settable at the practice or practice location level.

Re: SMS log

What if this was handled via the existing customer note, and a new supplier note?

Both would contain the following information:

  • optional patient(s)
  • note categories.
    • For customers these could include: Reminder, Statement
    • For suppliers these could include: Referral, Query
  • a contact type, denoting how the customer or supplier was contacted e.g. email, SMS, phone, mail

Both notes could be linked to the patient history, if required. This would be done by a flag on the note category.

When a customer or supplier is notified by OpenVPMS using email or SMS, a note would be created with a summary of the contact.
