Using Open VPMS in a Mobile Practice

I live in the USA. I have a mobile practice (75% equine). I am the only veterinarian. I am considering switching from an old DOS program to Open VPMS. I have two general questions. First, is the most appropriate setup using server at my home base and portable computer in the field as a work station? If so, do I owe for one vet? or two because two computers? Or would it be better just to do one computer (obviously the one I use in the field) and just back up to the second computer a my office?

I would like to use an OQO computer in the field because of it's portability. Does anyone use this machine already? Thanks. Jean

I'm not sure if this interests you, but we are in the final phases of introducing a hosted OpenVPMS offering in the United States.  Our offering will include a hosted instance of OpenVPMS that you can access from anywhere.    If you are interested you can contact me at Pete[at]aptconsulting[dot]com for more details.  Since it is hosted, you can use any portable device that has internet connectivity - such as a netbook.

We are working closely with the OpenVPMS team to develop an offering that is turnkey and ready for the US market, and would love to work with you.

Hi Jean,

Firstly the subscription is by Full Time Equivalent vet so you can access OpenVPMS from as many computers as you like.

There are a huge number of options on how you deploy the OpenVPMS software and how you access locally and remotely.  You can readily install on your laptop/netbook, a fixed PC/server or as Peter suggests host it elsewhere and access it across the Internet from any device.  You can even start off one way and then change as your business needs change. There is really no restriction from the software side really just what is most efficient and cost effective for you.

I think it is always good to have a relationship with a local IT company who can advise on the best architecture for you and then help you implement and support it.

Cheers

Tony

I doubt in this area a cloud setup will work.... cell phone coverage is best with Verizon and even so not perfect. Besides, I am a little paranoid about other folks and my data.

I think I may just have a go at setting it up on my OQO. I am going on "vacation" in a couple weeks and I could use the time to check out how well it served my needs during that time frame.

I assume databack up is via using tools in MYSQL? Jean

Best of luck on your setup.  If you need any assistance or wish to speak to us about the modifications we've made so far to support US based clients feel free to contact me, I can help to point you in the right direction or offer services as needed.  If you will be at NAVC in Orlando we will be there in booth # 428 and will have the software available for demo.  Look for "APT Information Technology Consultants" and our "Vetanium Practice Management Technology Services" offering.  Thanks!

Hi Jean,

OpenVPMS database backup is typically done using the Mysql administrator tools and can be scheduled using the same.  You will still need to backup your laptop.netbook to an external hard drive to facilitate disaster recovery.  There are many software and hardwrae solutions available for this.

If you have any questions on setup and configuration please feel free to use the list.

Cheers

Tony
