Attaching large files within OpenVPMS

Hi,

Our receptionist has just tried to attach a scanned copy of a patients medical records to it's file. This is often done when clients move from one clinic to another and bring a copy of their records with them.

Today the file was quite large, 17 pages of hx and path results were scanned, and would not attach to the file as it was too large (see screen shot attached of error received). In the past we've broken the hx up and scanned it in several sections and then attached each section to the file. This takes time and I notice in the error it says: "Packet for query is too large (30148682 > 16776192). You can change this value on the server by setting the max_allowed_packet' variable."

How do I change this value, and if I change it does it affect any other areas in the system?

Sandra.

Re: Attaching large files within OpenVPMS

Hi Sandra,This is actually a Mysql confguration issue and your integrator can change the value in Mysql to allow queries containing large amounts of data to work.   I would say though that an approx 30M compressed file (OpenVPMS compresses documents before it stores them and uncompress's them when you access them) is, in my opinion, very large for a 17 page scanned document.  It would indicate that the scanning is being done at a very high resolution and colour settings.  Did you scan the document yourself or receive the file somehow ? If the former I would have a good look at your scanning settings as I believe you may be wasting a lot of storage space for little benefit in the end result for this type of information  ...CheersTony

Scanning settings

We tend to scan at 150dpi into pdfs. It is probably overkill to be honest. 17 pages pending on type of content would equate to about 7MB uncompressed.
