Digital Xray files

Hi all

Had a bit of a search through previous posts and apart from a 2009 discussion, I can't see anything new regarding how people are dealing with digital radiograph files.

Somewhat belatedly we are joining the digital era, and before we make a purchase and/or set up the storage and management of files, I wanted to get my head around the bets way to use OpenVPMS in the process. My thought was to leave the original dicom files on the PC attached to the digitiser, but export the jpegs into a file that OpenVPMS then collects and attaches to patient records through the standard investigation process.

So really I just need to know if there is a better way of doing it, and whether it matters "where" the jpeg export file is saved - on the local digitiser PC or on the server.

Thanks in anticipation of some wisdom

Re: Digital Xray files

You can do this with the Docloader system

Your Dicom or PACS system should take a Investigation Number (essential all xrays should now have an investigation attached).  Hopefully the system can be configured to save a document(jpg) to a networked directory (preferably on the OPEN Server) that docloader can then automatically attach to the patient file

There maybe a more fully intergrated option but you would need a more experienced intergrator or implementor than I.

Tony might be able to help

Re: Digital Xray files

we were sold on the sytem being able to talk to open, just like the Idexx machine.  Hasn't quite worked out like that. we save them on a thumb drive and transfer jpegs into the in file of your document import folder. then change the description to reflect the investigation number. Just becomes yet another thing the nurses need to fiddle around with as we need to store vetpath/pathology files, anaesthetic charts, consent forms, medication, fluid and feeding charts these days(they all have their own investigations numbers/requests)

Re: Digital Xray files

Hi Garry,

Would be intersted to discuss offline who sold you system based on OpenVPMS integration.

Also we have heaps of sites that have both Idexx internal and external integration setup with Open.  Again would like to know what isn't working.

Cheers Tony

Re: Digital Xray files

Hi Paul,

OpenVPMS itself doesn't have any direct DICOM support but we have developed an add-on package that provides a number of DICOM features.

1.  Modality Worklist.  Using OpenVPMS current Investigations you can have a Digital Xray system which support DICOM Modality Work List query OpenVPMS for Investigations associated with it so that the patient details, including the investigation request id are automatically entered and ready for your study.

2. Modality Procedure Performed Step.  As you completed the study on the Digital XRay system it updates the Investigation status in OpenVPMS.

3. PACS Query/Retrieve.  Rather than having to export and import images into OpenVPMS a link is displayed in OpenVPMS that allows you to directly access the image(s) from a PACS server.  The PACS must currently support WADO (Web Acess Dicom Objects) or allow access to images via a web URL.

We have tested the system against the Clearcanvas Imageserver open source PACs as wellas with VetWebX, a commercial PACS system.  We expect to support most PACS implementations in the future.

The product will be available soon as we are just in the process of doing some site based testing.  If you are interested in it then please contact me.

Cheers Tony

Re: Digital Xray files

Tony - can you please notify the forum (or me directly) when this product is available. I was about to start implementing something (see http://www.openvpms.org/forum/links-rather-documents ) when Tim A pointed me at this thread.

Re: Digital Xray files

Hi Tim and Paul,

We will start implementing ODI in September this year.  Please contact me off forum if you need any further details on Modaily, PACS compatibility as well as costs. :-)

Cheers Tony

Re: Digital Xray files

Thanks Tony

We will be keen to look at this when it is available too. Makes sense to pre-fill the client info from Open as part of the process. Seems some staff can't even work out the difference between the patient and client names in the xray software...

We are still thrashing around trying to find the best way to set up the investigation numbers on our veterinary pathology results - but getting closer to printing a label with the investigation number on it so we can simply stick this on lab form and the receive the emailed lab document with the lab number as the first part of it's name. Slow process though...

I use IDEXX as my path lab and have created an IDEXX submission form in OpenVPMS that has the Investigation Number on it (as well as practice, client and patient data).  IDEXX then send the path results via Lablink to our server (in Lablink you specify the format of the name of the document - I ensure Investigation Number is first on filename) and OpenVPMS inserts them into the patient record. I believe ASAP has a similar system. I'm actually halfway through preparing a tutorial on this.  Fiddly to set up but works beautifully for both our in-house Catalyst and external path reports.

Yuri.
