Document Locks - Is it possible to turn off

Hi,

We are having a bit of trouble with Document Locks as the staff that use the External Edit function aren't able to access the Document Locks tab, so every time a document locks for them, they have to find an administrator to delete the lock. They do use the External Edit function quite a lot and it's great, but they probably get locked a couple of times a week, which is enough to be annoying.

We are also having trouble with a couple of computers where they lock the document even though it has been closed properly. Not sure if this is a bug with the computer or with the user or it's a bug in OpenVPMS.

Is it possible to turn off Document Locks all together?

If not, is it possible to make the Document Locks tab available to staff that aren't administrators?

Thanks,

Re: Document Locks - Is it possible to turn off

If there is a lock on a document, it means that someone has it open in an editor somewhere. OpenOffice will tell you who has the lock e.g.:

Document file 'Referral Letter.odt' is locked for editing by:

         Jo Smith

Open document read-only or open a copy of a document for editing.

If they no longer need to edit the document, just ask them to close it, and the lock will be removed. If you administratively remove the lock, any edits they are making may be lost.

By default, OpenOffice will acquire the lock every 2 minutes. If a user has shut down their PC, a lock should automatically expire after 2 minutes. However, if they have just walked away from their desk, the lock will automatically renew.

To avoid people being prevented from editing documents, remind users to close documents after they have finished working on them. This will release the edit lock.

Re: Document Locks - Is it possible to turn off

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the reply. We understand how the locks work, but they are still causing issues for us because of the inability to delete the lock by the user.

The locks are often created here by the user being timed out of their laptops or VPN. When they log back into their laptops or VPN, the document is still there, but it cannot be saved anymore (because it's locked). Even if they close the document, it is still locked. We are trying to close the documents when they aren't using them, but we use the external edit function so much that there are still times when they are open.

Is there a way we can make the Delete function available to more staff?

Can we turn off the lock function or is it dictated by OpenOffice?

Greta
