Drop Down Lists or Lookups for Macros

Hi,

I think I may echo Chris in this request however although we do use macros in our data entry they would be much more effective and widely used if there was a lookup for the macro or a drop down list that would then allow the use to choose the appropriate macro from the list. As it currently stands it is very difficult to get all the members of the clinic using macros as they are unsure of the correct ones to use.

If this makes it to the project stage I will support it strongly.

Drop down lists or lookups for Macros

So are we imaging the autocomplete behaviour seen in open office? Where words will magically autocomplete and pressing enter commits them?

Tim is this feasible in the echo framework. It would have to be javascript to be responsive enough, yes?

Drop Down Lists or Lookups

There is limited support for it in echo, and the support that's there doesnt support macro expansion or multi-line text fields.

I suspect that the issue is more of an education one. Would a Help option that lists all macros be useful?

Drop Down Lists or Lookups

Hi Guys,

I think a simple icon on side of text boxes which pops up a small macro seach list with ability to select and have the expanded macro inserted at the current text position in the text box.

Cheers

Re: New or updated comment for General User's Discussion Forum t

Hi All,

The option put forward by Tony seems very sensible to me. As long as there is a reminder of what the text string for the macro is then it can be easily inserted. The biggest problem is having a nomenclature that everyone understands and remembers.

Macro lists

Given the macro purpose is to save typing time, is clicking on a button, then searching, then clicking on a result any faster in most cases then typing?

I guess for very long macros it is.

Ideally the macro list needs to be visible at a glance but in clinics which have many macros this becomes very difficult to acheive in screen.

Macros are part of our staff training sessions and we used to have a printed list in our dispensary. At the begininng I had post-it notes on my screen... none of these solutions acheive what you guys need.

If I was going to use a button as a macro reminder/training assistant, I would prefer it opened a dialog full screen that listed in columns as many macros as possible. I think once you need to start typing in a search field the utlity of macros becomes significantly diminished?

Drop Down Lists or Lookups

Hi Matt,

The issue seems mainly to be remembering the macros that are available so a display of code and description aids this.  Over time they are learnt but a new user needs some kind of prompt.

Also there can be many macros of varying length (I have seen ones upto 4000 characters long) so there is a real advantage in the few extra key strokes.

Tim, can we initiate the list via a keystroke somehow i.e Alt Space or similar ?

Would pop up a dialogue displaying code and description with some quick lookup function (maybe like current select fields) ?

Cheers

Tony

Re: Drop Down Lists or Lookups

Hey Tony, Add a key stroke to close prompt as well, say ESC or ALT-O (for consistency). Matt C

Re: Drop Down Lists or Lookups

There shouldn't be any issues popping up a dialog which displays a list of macros, nor closing it with ESC.

What can't easily be supported is selecting a macro from the dialog and having it pasted it into the field.

Re: Drop Down Lists or

Excellent. Everyone happy with this solution? Chris & Sam especially? We can create a project and a JIRA pretty quickly I imagine.

How do you want the macros sorted guys? Alphabetically by Name or Macro code?

Re: New or updated comment for General User's Discussion Forum t

Hi all,

Many of our macros are several sentences long so  quick look-up list suits our needs well. Macro name rather than code would be give us more flexibility in grouping them.

Macro list popup (Developer Update)

Hey everyone,

This project has also finished developer review and is costed at a miserly $660.

Just imagine at the click of a hot key you can see all your macros listed to remind those rusty or new brains.

Where Macros are able to be used a hot key combination will open a popup dialog containing;

  1. Display a table of macros
The table would display the code and name nodes of the macros
By default, it would be sorted on name
  2. Display a large number of macros without requiring scrolling
Page navigation buttons will be automatically displayed if there are too many macros to fit
  3. Provide a filter to query macros by partial name and/or code
By default all macros will be displayed (Sweet Ed.)
  4. Be closed by pressing an OK button, or the ESC key

As always,

Public pledges can be made to this forum topic or email me directly by clicking here (link only works in the forum).
Development will not commence until fully funded.
