How to set up Microchipping service

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Briefly,  in the UK, animal's microchipping details are held in a national database, similar to Australia as I understand it.  To register the microchip No. to the animal's identification details, a form must be submitted to the national database, either via email or physically printed and posted.

How would one set this up on OPV?

My initial thoughts would be to add a product "microchip" to the database, then add a "microchip inplantation service" and link these two under a "Microchip template".  Then when an animal comes in to be chipped, the template "Microchip" is charged to the client account.  This would reduce the stock of microchips by one, and generate the appropriate charge to the client.

But, how could you set up OPV to automagically generate a chip-form which sucks the appropriate animal and client details out from the client record and puts them in an appropriate format for either printing or posting to the national chip database?  This would need to be an automatic popup box like the one that appears quering reciept upon payment.

Thanks in advance.

Such a chip form already exists for Central Animal Records in Victoria.  You may be able to modify it or use it as a basis for your UK form: see http://www.openvpms.org/customisation/car-microchip-subscription-form

Re: How to set up Microchipping service

Yuri,

Thanks for the link.  I think this form is suitable, but I am just a little unclear as to how to attach it to a service so that it pops up on patient check-out or billing?  Is this process automatic?  Does one have to enter the chip number under patient identity as a separate process too?

Re: How to set up Microchipping service

Hi Cahir,

The document is added to the templates in the administration area. You would add this sort of document as a patient form.

Next you edit the product (this can be a medication or service) and you attach that document template to the product.

Whenever the product is charged the document is created for that patient.

It can be set in the template section to 'print at invoicing' which means that it will print as soon as you save your invoice. Alternatively you could set it to print at checkout.

With regards to the microchip number being added: yes, currently you have to manually add it to the patients entities.

You need to see what your jurisdiction's legislative requirements are when setting up your microchip document printing.

The legislative requirement in Victoria is that the owner/authorised agent of the owner of the dog/cat sign a completed form BEFORE the microchipping is undertaken.  Thus we need to manually enter the microchip number then generate a document that the owner signs (acknowledging that the information on the form is true and correct and that he/she understands the privacy implications).  Then the microchipping service can be performed.

"It can be set in the template section to 'print at invoicing'"

In Victoria you'd thus need to select a microchip, enter the number manually then invoice the microchip service immediately on check-in, in order to generate the appropriate document.
