openvpms on the iphone
Recently I have started using an iphone and have been trying to get openvpms to run on it (not sure why)
It now works and I can use a fully functional version of open vpms via my touch screen on the iphone - very clunky to use but still possible with data changes being immediately present on the system.
What I did:
Bought Remote Desktop app from MochaSoft via the apps store (about $8 I think), and then use that to log onto a windows xp laptop in the practice that in turn has a remote desktop sign-in into the server using Windows 2003 Server. The app then allows you to use the screen in the same way as you do for all iphone applications - finger navigation, screen tap on buttons and a touch keyboard. It is really easy to set up and wonder if it is the start of affordable cage-side touch screen interfaces.
The iphone also supports an app for osirix - and excellent open source Mac dicom viewer. Again gimmicky but amazingly good.
Has anyone else experience with this or see any application for a palm-sized mobile interface for their practice software. You need to be in the wireless network zone for it to work.

Hi Sam,
why did you need to use remote desktop to access it, why not just access it using safari on your iphone as you would with openVPMS on any other computer?
I have tried the online demo on my iphone. It works fine but is you say it doesn't really scale very well. I guess the advantage of using remote desktop is that you would be able to print, etc on the server you are accessing.
Perhaps the future would be developing apps which could access the openVPMS database for a specific task eg. doing stock control or something like that.
Cheers,
Matt Young.

Hi List, Or perhaps for nurses to be able to make appointments on a pda with wireless access when they're away from a terminal. Sounds pretty good to me. Peter

openvpms on the iphone
Hi Matt,
I tried to do as you suggested at first however it did not seem to work. We are using a windows 2003 server with terminals throughout the practice. What address would you recommend entering into safari? - the address that works on a terminal sign-in is localhost:8080/openvpms (or similar). This doesn't work. Going straight to the server IP address doesn't work?
It seems the most direct path however the only way I could get it to work was by the rdp app for the iphone.

Hi Sam,
It does work directly I have done it locally here. Sounds like you are using terminal server. localhost is only accessing the local computer which in the case of the terminals is the server. On the iphone using localhost will only access the iphone itself.
You need to enter the IP address of your server and the port number as well. for example on my network I enter 192.168.0.254:8080 . That IP address is the IP address of the computer running tomcat.
Hope that helps,
Matt.

Sounds like a need for a web services/SCA interface so that you can build a lightweight iphone app or (I haven't seen the code) develop a new view (presentation) layer that can interface with existing model and controller layer.
Thanks Matt
I did as you suggested and can now use Safari to navigate to the server application and it seems to be more user friendly. Finger scrolling and finger tapping works fine on all the major headings.
Thanks for the advice,
Sam
RE: Thanks Matt
This is one of the great things about OpenVPMS being a web application. It is so readily migrated to any platform with no or minimal need to install additional applications etc.
Cheers Tony
