Storing Microchip Litter numbers

We were going to store a litter of puppies microchip numbers in a note under the bitches medical records. The bar code scanner scans the chip numbers into the identities microchip feild but it won't scan the chip numbers into the note under medical records. Why can't the chip numbers be scanned into the notes feild under the medical records?

What are common alternatives that other uses of openVPMS use?

Re: Storing Microchip Litter numbers

Soraya - this sounds funny to me. I don't have a barcode reader here to play with, but I tested one in Hong Kong. It happily pumped the barcode into anything (eg notepad, OpenVPMS product code, etc) just as though I typed it in on the keyboard.  There were no drivers to install - I just plugged it into a USB port. I tested on PCs running XP, Win7, a WyseTerm, and a linux box. All worked. Its default setup was to follow the data by the code for the Enter key and that worked a treat.

This is going to sound a really stupid question:  when you are trying to enter the barcode into the Note text, what happens if you type abc on the keyboard - does this appear in the note?

Re: Storing Microchip Litter numbers

Sorry for the delay and this might sound like a stupid answer... I think it is a bad USB port.  It worked fine on other machines and other ports on the same machine.  All good now.

Thanks, Simon
