[General Discussion] Pommie in your midst!

Hi Guys,
I was moved to visit here based on a post I spotted over at the (very stale) OpenVetMed project page.
I am the IT Manager for a veterinary group in the UK with 30 clinics and we currently have three clinic management packages in use - mainly due to growth through acquisitions.
One of the systems we use is effectively obsolete in terms of architecture and expandability.
One of the systems does not replicate data to other clinics or to HQ for Management reporting so we have to do a lot of manual data gathering. On the other hand, although the software is around 7 years old it works.
The last system is badly designed, full of bugs, replicates 'just about' (if it feels like it) and the suppliers are a PITA to deal with as they pretty much feel they have 'lock in' with us.
I am currently looking at alternatives with a view to replacing all current systems with one products and I am a great fan of Open Source solutions, provided they fulfill the business need.
I will certainly be having a look at the code to check its functionality - apart from the usual clinic management functions, I'm looking for centralised management of stock pricing, with regional pricing options, replication of appointments between clinics (so clients can book appointments in one clinic from a different one) , access to patient notes across sites and automated stock ordering and either some decent reporting or a tidy interface to a reporting system! Not much, eh!
My background is electronic engineering, systems and networking, training & courseware development and a smattering of programming. Prior to my current position, I worked for 8 years in the IT Technical, Call Centre and Help Desk industries as a trainer and consultant. I also worked on a freelance basis for a number of UK and global training companies both delivering courses, training trainers and developing courseware - I was in Sydney and Brisbane about 7 years ago helping a company introduce some technical training (A+ Service Technician) material into Australia and was responsible for both the development of the material and training the trainers. I suppose that what I am actually saying is that I'd be a suitable candidate for documentation and testing.
I have some thoughts on the subscription model - but I'll put them in the relevant discussion area.
Cheers for now!
